The club

Started over a coffee. Still runs on it.

Gambit Poblenou is a small, friendly chess club a few minutes from the Rambla. It began with two people, one travel set, and a standing order of cortados. These days a dozen or so of us turn up most weeks, somewhere between absolute beginners and people who really should know better.

There are no membership cards and no entry test. If you can find the café and you’d like a game, you’re a member. We’ll teach you the moves, lend you a clock, and pair you with someone at roughly your level so the first night isn’t a massacre.
